For many electric vehicle owners, home is where most charging happens. Australian Government guidance says around 80% of reported EV charging occurs at home, which makes the way your charger is planned and installed an important part of EV ownership. Before choosing a charger, it is worth looking at your parking arrangement, everyday driving, electrical supply and how you would actually like to charge the car.
A home EV charger does not need to be complicated, but buying the equipment first and investigating the property afterwards can create unnecessary problems. The charger, the vehicle and the home's electrical system all need to work together, so a little planning can help you choose a solution that suits your needs rather than simply buying the highest-powered charger available.
Start with where the car will actually be parked
The first question is practical: where will the EV be parked while it charges?
For a garage or private driveway, consider where the car's charging port sits when the vehicle is parked normally. The charger should be positioned so the cable can reach comfortably without being stretched across a walkway, driveway or area where it is likely to be damaged.
The distance between the charger and the home's switchboard also matters. Running a new dedicated circuit through an accessible garage may be relatively straightforward. Getting power to a detached garage, carport or parking space some distance from the house can involve more planning.
If you are renovating or building, it is worth discussing future EV charger installation before walls, ceilings, landscaping and driveways are finished. Even if you do not own an EV yet, planning a suitable route for electrical cabling can make a later installation easier.
How fast do you actually need to charge?
It is easy to focus on charging speed, but the fastest possible charger is not necessarily the most useful choice for every household.
An EV can be charged from a suitable standard household power point using the appropriate charging equipment supplied or approved for the vehicle. Australian Government guidance describes this as Level 1 charging, with a maximum output of around 2.4 kW. It is comparatively slow, but for someone who drives relatively short distances and can leave the vehicle charging for long periods, it may meet their needs.
A dedicated Level 2 home charger provides faster AC charging. Government guidance identifies dedicated home chargers in the range of approximately 7 to 22 kW, although what can actually be provided at a particular home depends on the vehicle, charger and electrical installation.
Faster is not automatically better. Think about how far you normally drive, how long the car is parked at home and how much energy you generally need to replace. The right charger should suit your real charging routine as well as your electrical system.
Can your home's electrical system support the charger?
A dedicated EV charger is a significant electrical load, so the condition and capacity of the existing installation need to be considered before it is connected.
A licensed electrician can assess the switchboard, existing circuits and electrical supply and determine what is appropriate for the property. In some homes, installation may be reasonably straightforward. Others may require changes to the switchboard or electrical supply before the preferred charger can be installed.
This can be especially relevant in older Sydney homes or properties that have already accumulated other large electrical loads such as air conditioning, electric cooking, pool equipment or solar and battery systems.
If the existing board needs attention, it can be sensible to consider the EV installation alongside any required switchboard upgrades rather than treating the charger as an isolated addition.
Choose the charger around the car and the household
Before purchasing a charger, check the charging specifications for your vehicle. The charger's advertised maximum output does not by itself determine how quickly every EV will charge, so there is little benefit in choosing equipment purely because it has the largest number on the specification sheet.
It is also worth thinking beyond the car you own today. If another EV may be added to the household later, or you expect your driving patterns to change, mention this when planning the installation. That does not necessarily mean installing the largest possible charger now, but it can influence decisions about cabling, electrical capacity and charger features.
Think about when you want the car to charge
A charger does not always need to begin drawing power as soon as the vehicle is plugged in. Many EVs and home chargers allow charging to be scheduled, while smart chargers can provide more control over when electricity is used.
This can be useful if your electricity plan offers different rates at different times of day. Instead of remembering to plug the car in at a particular hour, you may be able to connect it when you arrive home and schedule charging for later.
Smart charging can also form part of a broader smart home or home energy management setup, particularly for households combining EV charging with solar, batteries or other substantial electrical loads.
If you have solar, consider how the EV fits into it
For homes with rooftop solar, charging during periods of solar generation can allow more of that energy to be used within the property rather than drawing all of the charging energy from the grid.
Whether this works well for you depends on when the vehicle is normally at home, the size and output of the solar system, household electricity use and the charging controls available.
If the EV is usually away from home during the middle of the day, for example, solar charging may be less important to your everyday routine than scheduled off-peak charging. If the car is regularly home during daylight hours, smart charging features that respond to available solar generation may be more useful.
Plan the charger as part of the home's energy use. EV charging, solar, batteries, air conditioning and other large loads increasingly interact. Looking at the whole property can produce a more practical solution than choosing each system independently.
What if you live in an apartment or strata property?
EV charging becomes more involved when the parking space is within a strata building. Even if the space belongs to your lot, supplying electricity to it may involve common property, shared electrical infrastructure or building electrical capacity.
NSW Government guidance states that owners should contact the owners corporation for approval before connecting EV charging equipment. Tenants generally need to work through their landlord, who can then deal with the owners corporation.
The building may already have an EV charging process or infrastructure in place. If it does not, the owners corporation may need to consider how charging will affect available electrical capacity, metering, billing and future demand from other residents.
This is why an apartment installation should generally begin with a conversation with the strata manager or building manager rather than purchasing a charger first. For buildings considering charging across multiple parking spaces, a coordinated strata and property management electrical approach can be more practical than treating each charger separately.
Questions worth answering before you buy
Before ordering a home EV charger, try to establish where it will be installed, how far you normally drive, how quickly you genuinely need to recharge, what charging capacity your vehicle accepts and whether your home's electrical system can support the proposed installation.
Also consider whether you want scheduled or smart charging, whether solar is part of the equation and whether your future plans could include another EV, a battery or other significant electrical upgrades.
Once those questions are answered, choosing a charger becomes much easier.
